Erin Trapolino Black, Owner and Voice, Piano and Guitar Instructor
Erin grew up in Helena and began her musical journey as a child taking piano lessons. It wasn’t long before she realized that her true passion lied in singing and performing. She began her solo performances as a guess performer with the Medwise Entertainers and Silver Linings at age 12. At age 17 she started in music ministry at Prince of Peace Catholic Church where she performed with the praise band for 8 years before being promoted to lead the group. She has sang with several choirs and small ensembles beginning as a child through High School to Collegiate Concert and Touring Choirs. She has performed solos with touring choirs at several cathedrals in Europe including the Notre Dome Cathedral. During high school and college she was selected to perform in Regional choirs and solo competitions and participated in several vocal workshops. Erin received music scholarships to study Vocal Performance at the University of Montevallo and Commercial Music the University of North Alabama where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Music for Commercial Music Performance. Erin has been performing wedding ceremonies since she was 16 years old and enjoys the opportunity share her love on someone’s special day. In addition to running her thriving music school, Old Towne Music, and teaching her many talented students, Erin is currently leading the praise band at Prince of Peace Catholic Church and the lead singer for Birmingham’s professional 1980s rock/pop tribute band, The M-80s. You can also hear Erin Black performing local acoustic shows around town.
Scotlyn Miller, Piano Instructor
Scotlyn Miller began studying piano in 2002. In 2010 and 2012, Ms. Miller played in performances of the Birmingham Metro Music Forum and was a guest soloist at an educational conference at Gardner-Webb University in 2010. She participated in and passed the Piano Theory Achievement Exam of the Birmingham Metro Music Forum in 2014. She began attending the University of Montevallo in the fall of 2015; and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree with a focus in piano. In both the fall of 2015 and spring of 2016 she was on the University of Montevallo School of Fine Art’s Dean’s List. In the spring of 2016, she was awarded an Honorable Mention at the Alabama Music Teachers Association Collegiate Solo Audition. She is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society for outstanding academic achievement. She began teaching at Old Towne Music in the summer of 2016.
Katie Searcy, Assistant Director and Voice and Guitar Instructor
Katie Searcy has been singing and performing since a very young age with her first solo performance at age five. As she grew up, she was in every choir available to her including the 9th Grade Choir, 9th Grade Show Choir, 10th Grade Choir, 9th and 10th Grade Honors Choir, 11th Grade Honors Choir, 12th Grade Honors Choir, and the Hoover Chamber Choir from 10th to 12th grade.Starting in high school, she was recruited as the music worship leader for almost every Christian organization on the Hoover High School campus and several outside bible studies. At 15, she began performing solo in public, singing and accompanying herself on acoustic guitar. Katie is a graduate of the University of Montevallo with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a minor in Psychology. She is planning to pursue a Masters degree in Counseling. While in college, Katie participated in the University Chorus and the University of Montevallo Concert Choir, which was the touring choir. As a member of the Concert Choir, she had the opportunity to sing in beautiful cathedrals in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Austria.
Katie currently teaches voice and guitar at Old Towne Music and is a worship leader at Montevallo First United Methodist Church. She is bright, enthusiastic, and is able to connect well with kids of all ages.
Sam Herman, Drum and Percussion Instructor
Sam Herman is a percussionist, performer, and educator in the greater Birmingham area. A passionate advocate for contemporary music, Mr. Herman co-founded Iron Giant Percussion in 2011, an ensemble dedicated to championing works by noted composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Iron Giant took first prize in the 2013 Clefworks Chamber Music Competition, and was invited to perform in Montgomery with world renowned ensemble, So Percussion. The group’s recent concert for the Birmingham Art Music Alliance’s 2012-2013 season featured an evening of world-premiere works by local and international composers. When he isn’t busy performing tedious experimental music, Mr. Herman enjoys cutting loose with improvisational rock and roll outfits, and works frequently with internationally acclaimed drum circle facilitator, John Scalici. He received his BA in Music Technology with a concentration in percussion performance from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2012.
Andrew Harper, Guitar Instructor (Acoustic, Electric, Classical, Bass and Mandolin)
Andrew Harper is a classical guitarist, performer and teacher. He completed his Bachelors of Science in Music at the University of North Alabama in 2013 and is currently continuing his musical studies at the University of Montevallo. His well rounded course of study exposes students to a variety of musical genres and instills applicable musical skills such as note reading, transposing, and improvising.
Christine Canady, Piano Instructor
Christine Canady began studying piano in 1981 at the age of 8 years old. In 10 years of continuous private lessons, from instructor Mrs. June McAffee of Hoover, she participated in the Hymn Festival, Solo Festival and Theory Festivals held at Samford University, receiving a Superior Rating for 6 years in a row.
She was part of all school choirs from 7th -12th grade and was asked by her Choir Directors to accompany on many occasions. She also accompanied the Adult and Youth choirs at her home church, where she also participated in the State Teen Talent Competitions receiving 1st runner up 2 years in a row. At that time she became a member of the “Who’s Who Among Teenagers” in the United States.
She took a break and started a family and 15 years later got back into accompanying at Prince of Peace Catholic Church and School and taught private piano lessons after school. Today she is the accompanist at St. Peter’s the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoover, which includes several choirs, funerals, weddings.
Christine started teaching with Old Towne Music in September 2016.
